With the development of the architecture of Bierzo, the surrounding villages and villages of Las Médulas are, on the one hand, encouraged to revamp their attractions from an urban design point of view, while also fostering a sense of belonging and identity among the inhabitants who get involved in the initiative.
Traditional architecture and development
With regard to village planning in the Cultural and Natural Space of Las Medulas, the Las Médulas Foundation has created a programme to promote the rehabilitation of buildings that follow the traditional architectural designs of western Bierzo, where Las Médulas is located.
Under the name REPARA—which stands for “rational recovery of heritage”—the Las Médulas Foundation offers advisory and administrative services for the rehabilitation of housing, preservation of architectural heritage, and urban planning and organisation in the villages of Carucedo, Priaranza del Bierzo and Puente de Domingo Flórez. REPARA can also be extended to other villages in the Bierzo region that request it.
The aim of REPARA is to encourage the design and implementation of special plans and policies that proactively promote the protection of heritage, landscape and local architecture. This will foster both the occupation and rehabilitation of unused dwellings and the enhancement of architectural heritage with the ultimate aim of tackling depopulation and climate change.
REPARA’s advisory work is based on the analysis of the municipal bylaws and special development plans in force in each village. This will help to achieve the goal of harmonising the architectural landscape and, at the same time, contribute to the improvement of existing standards and even generate new opportunities for the villages.
In addition to incorporating techniques that mitigate the influence of climate change, the rehabilitation and preservation of traditional architectural heritage also has a role to play in terms of social and landscape aspects. In turn, it contributes to the fight against the gradual abandonment of rural areas, which is something that the villages around Las Médulas have been experiencing.
